Quinta São Bernardo Boutique Hotel in the Douro Valley

Contemporary Design Rooted in the Landscape and Wine Culture of the Douro

In the Douro Valley, the landscape is inseparable from the experience.

Overlooking one of Portugal’s most distinctive wine regions, Quinta São Bernardo is a boutique hotel devoted to wine tourism and an authentic farm-to-table experience.

Here, hospitality is closely connected to place.

The surrounding vineyards, regional traditions and intimate character of the property create an environment where guests can experience the Douro at a slower pace, with carefully selected design pieces contributing to the warmth and refinement of the interiors.

Within this setting, Sentta is represented through the Goa Collection, Dama Armchair, Pipo Lounge Chair and Hugs Pouf —three distinct expressions of contemporary design that find a natural connection with the character of Quinta São Bernardo.

Designed by Francesc Rifé Studio, the Goa Collection introduces an understated sense of elegance.

Inspired by the landscapes and atmosphere of Goa, the collection is defined by clean lines, balanced proportions and a subtle design language that allows the materials and craftsmanship to remain central.

For this project, the pieces are crafted in ash wood, finished in brown pewter and upholstered in velvet, bringing warmth and sophistication to the hotel’s interiors.

The collection includes a dining chair, armchair, lounge chair and bar stool, allowing the same restrained aesthetic to move naturally between different seating environments.

Alongside Goa, the Dama Armchair, designed by André Teoman, introduces a more geometric character.

Angles and simple shapes define its contemporary silhouette, drawing influence from mid-century modern design.

Its structured presence creates a distinctive contrast with the softer elements of the interior, demonstrating how different furniture languages can coexist within the same hospitality environment without losing visual harmony.

The Pipo Lounge Chair, also designed by André Teoman, establishes perhaps the most direct dialogue with the project’s location.

Pipo pays tribute to Porto’s iconic wine vats, translating their rounded forms into a voluminous and protective lounge chair.

Within a boutique hotel devoted to wine tourism in the Douro Valley, that reference takes on particular significance.

The design does not simply reproduce the object that inspired it. Instead, the familiar rounded volume of the wine vat becomes a contemporary piece of furniture—sculptural, embracing and designed around comfort.

It creates a subtle connection between Portuguese design and the winemaking culture surrounding Quinta São Bernardo.

This relationship between furniture and place is particularly meaningful when considering boutique hotel furniture in the Douro Valley.

Boutique hospitality is often defined by specificity.

Rather than creating an interior that could exist anywhere, carefully considered furniture can help reinforce the identity of a destination—through materials, craftsmanship, form or the stories behind individual designs.

At Quinta São Bernardo, these connections appear in different ways.

Goa and Hugs introduce quiet elegance and balanced proportions.

Dama adds geometry and contemporary character.

Pipo establishes an unexpected dialogue with the culture of wine itself.

Together, they contribute to an interior that feels considered without becoming formal and distinctive without competing with the landscape beyond.

This balance is especially relevant in the Douro, where the surrounding environment already has such a powerful visual identity.

The furniture does not need to overpower it.

Instead, it creates places from which to experience it.

A dining chair for a meal shaped by local ingredients. An armchair for conversation. A lounge chair for slowing down after discovering the vineyards.

At Quinta São Bernardo, contemporary design becomes part of a broader experience of Portuguese landscape, food, wine and hospitality.

Douro tradition without imitation. Contemporary design connected to place. A boutique hotel where landscape, wine and hospitality become part of the same experience.
